About Henk
Hendrik Zwart (1923 - 2019)—known as Henk—was a Dutch Australian artist, animator, and cartoonist.
Henk led a creative and adventurous life. He grew up in Holland during the 1920’s and 1930’s. During World War II, he was a member of the Dutch Resistance and created counter-propaganda against the Nazi’s. A novela of Henk’s WWII story is pending publication.
Henk’s creativity and talent for drawing started in very early childhood. His talent was noticed at school. At 15, he studied at the School of Modern Art in Amsterdam. Henk studied under Eppo Doeve, surrounded by a collection of Picasso's fine line drawings. As 19, he joined one of the first animation companies in Europe. Henk went on to become art director at top international advertising agencies.
Henk immigrated to Australia after WWII. In Australia, Henk created worldwide icons in big brand advertising and animation. The famous “Snap, Crackle & Pop” (Rice Bubble / Rice Krispies) was brought to life by Hendrik Zwart. Henk continued to work in big brand advertising until the 1980s.
Henk and his talented wife Nerida then spent 11 years in Holland. During that time, the couple co-created the Bobobobs, which was adapted into an animation and broadcast in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The original Bobobobs animations are available online. More unseen and unpublished children’s cartoon and animation series, created by Henk and Nerida, are pending publication.
After returning to Australia in the early 1990s, Henk went onto create iconic Australiana-themed satirical drawings and oil on canvas works. Some of these works are showcased on this website.
During the 1990s and early 2000s Henk also compiled a series of writings, drawings, and paintings; inspired by biblical texts with a science-fiction twist. We hope to publish this soon.
On Valentines Day (14 February) 2019, Henk passed away at the age of 95. He has left behind his creative and fanciful artworks for future generations to enjoy.
Hendrikx is dedicated to sharing Henk's creativity with the world.
